교과목개요

Thermodynamics is the most important basic discipline in natural science and engineering. This course is a continuation of Materials Thermodynamics given in first semester. In this course, the basic principles such as

reactions involving pure condensed phases and a gaseous phase, the behavior of solutions, free energy-composition and phase diagrams of binary systems, reaction equilibria in systems contaning components in condensed solution and galvanic cells will be taught. Also, basic principles applicable to physico-chemical

systems encountered in industries will be taught. Emphasis will be made on thermodynamic principles and equations derived from tehm. Applciation on materials and metallurgical systems will be illustrated.

1. Understanding of spontaneous reactions and concept of criteria of equilibrium.

2. Computational ability of thermodynamics including heat of reactions.

3. Ellingham diagrams, understanding of activity and phase equilibrium diagram, ability of determining stability of phases.

주요 학습내용 및 수업진행방법

Lectures will be mainly given in English. Korean translation will be done when appropriate.

Students are expected to do short presentation at each class.
